Charles "Chock" Godfrey

Obituary of Charles "Chock" Sidney Godfrey

Charles Sidney “Chock” Godfrey, age 78, of Mount Vernon, passed away in the early evening hours of Tuesday, December 5, 2017 at his home, surrounded by his loving family.  Chock was born on August 6, 1939 in the Needmore Community of Franklin County, Texas to the late Wordy Joseph and Arlie Mae Howk Godfrey.  Following high school, Chock worked several jobs in various trades becoming a man of many talents, but those who knew him best will know his greatest skill was the ability talk to anyone.

Chock married the love of his life and best friend, Wilma June Nelson, on February 10, 1958 in Lubbock, Texas.  Together they have spent nearly 60 years raising a family and living a lifetime of memories.

Chock was a member of Calvary Baptist Temple in Mount Vernon.  There are very few people without a story about Chock.  He built one of the first baseball fields in Mount Vernon and was instrumental in countless lives through the baseball diamond over the years.  Many of Chocks favorite memories came while hunting and fishing.  Chock leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and dedication that will live on in the hearts of those he knew and loved.

Chock is survived by his loving wife, June Godfrey; sons, Monte Godfrey, and wife Pam, of Mount Vernon, Laine Godfrey, and wife Melissa, of Mount Pleasant, and Toby Godfrey, and wife Sue, of Mount Vernon; daughters, La’Doyce Davis, and husband Jerry, of Mount Pleasant and La’Kesa Giles, and husband Richard, of Commerce; grandchildren, Damian Godfrey, and wife Stephanie, Tori Godfrey, Chase Shipp, and wife Megan, Casey Davis, and wife Marta, Chanda Cox, and wife Misty, Chelsa Wenich, and husband Blaine, Charla Killian, and husband Rick, Christa Pruitt, and husband David, Reese Godfrey, Fenton Godfrey, and wife Hailey, Laithe Godfrey, Sarah Godfrey, John Giles, and wife Ashley, Michael Long, and wife Sarah, and Michelle Barron, and husband Patrick; 35 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren; brothers, Donnie Godfrey, and wife Beulah, and Jack Godfrey, and wife Janie, all of Sulphur Springs; and by a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and very special friends.
