Obituary of Henry Clay Wells, Jr.

Henry Clay Wells, Jr., age 71, of Mount Vernon, passed away in the early evening hours of Friday, October 13, 2017 at Christus Mother Frances Hospital in Sulphur Springs.  Henry was born on July 6, 1946 in Dallas, Texas to the late Henry Clay, Sr. and Lillian Florence Beatrice McCutchin.  Following high school, Clay, as he became known, began his walk with the Lord and spreading the word of God as preacher of the Baptist faith.  For 47 years, Clay’s unending love of the Lord was shared to countless souls whose lives were forever changed because of him.

Clay married the love of his life and his best friend, Sandra Elaine Thompson, on March 9, 1973 in Rockwall, Texas.  Together they shared the next 44 years raising a family and living a lifetime of memories. 

Clay was a member of the Hilltop Baptist Church in Mount Vernon.  Those who knew Clay best will remember him as a man who put God first, then his beloved family and friends.  Clay took care of everything for his wife and made sure she had everything that she needed.  Clay was a vital part of the lives of so many Christians over the years, leading countless of lives to salvation.  He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend who had a smile to light up a room and a sense of humor to brighten anyone’s day.  Clay will be missed by all who knew him.

Clay is survived by his wife, Elaine; sons, Gordon Wells of Dallas, Michael Wells, of Dallas, Michael Shane Chronister Wells of Mount Vernon, and Marty Lee Chronister Wells of Austin; daughters, Tamye Jane Dees of Mount Vernon and Tina Young of Saltillo; grandchildren, Kiley Rane Chronister, Corey Chronister, Curtis Chronister, Nathaniel Elijah Mizell, and Richard Caleb Martin; brother, Donald Wells, and wife Judy, of Dallas; sisters, Dorothy Corgill of Dallas and Wanda Hall of Dallas; and by a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and very special friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Tuesday, October 17, 2017 at Sam B. Harvey Funeral Home with Byron Hauck officiating.  Burial will follow at Stout’s Creek Cemetery with Corey Chronister, Curtis Chronister, Jon Dees, Gary Fulmer, and Steven Knight serving as pallbearers.  Visitation will be held from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M., Monday evening, at the funeral home.
