Obituary of Robert "Bob" Luther Smith

Robert “Bob” Luther Smith, age 81 of Mount Vernon, passed away in the late morning hours of Saturday, October 14, 2017, following a brief illness.  Bob was born on October 2, 1936 in Lawton, Oklahoma to the late Edward Luther and Chessie Noblett Smith.  Following high school, Bob proudly served his county in the United States Army as a member of the 82nd Airborne Paratrooper Unit.

Bob married the love of his life, his best friend and companion in everything, Linda Ross, on September 12, 1981 in Bedford, Texas.  Bob and Linda met as members of the Sotogrande Golf Club.  This began a 36 year romance that saw the birth of a daughter, the raising of a family, and a lifetime of memories that will live on for eternity.

Bob was a member of the First Baptist Church of Mount Vernon.  He and Linda owned and operated Rossmith Corporation in Mount Vernon for over 30 years.  Bob was an avid golfer.  He served as President of the Cypress Creek Country Club, on the Board of Directors for Glen Garden Country Club in Fort Worth, and he was a member of the Mount Pleasant Country Club. He also served on the Board of Directors for Shields Industrial Supply for several years.

Those who knew Bob best will remember him for his sense of humor and his brilliant mind. He enjoyed making people laugh and was telling jokes all the way to the very end.  Bob was a self-disciplined man who leaves behind a legacy of love for his family, dedication to his work, and loyalty to his vast group of friends who will forever miss him.

Bob is survived by his wife Linda of Mount Vernon; daughters, Amanda Kenna, and husband Zack, of Denton, Jennifer Heffelfinger of Alaska, and Julia Ameling of Dallas; one son, Edward Smith of Dallas; grandchildren, Jacob Heffelfinger, Jared Heffelfinger, and Jordan Heffelfinger; one sister, Reta Russell of Lawton, Oklahoma; and by a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and very special friends.

Funeral services for Robert “Bob” Smith were held at 2:00 P.M., Thursday, October 19, 2017 at Sam B. Harvey Funeral Home with Pastor Pepper Puryear officiating.  Burial followed at Mount Vernon City Cemetery.  Visitation was held one hour prior to the service.
