Ruby Young

Obituary of Ruby Lee Martin Young

Ruby Lee Martin Young, age 81, of Mount Vernon, passed away in the mid-afternoon hours of Tuesday, October 24, 2017 at the Titus Regional Medical Center in Mount Pleasant, after a brief illness.  Ruby was born on May 3, 1936 in Sasakwa, Oklahoma to the late William Edward and Nettie Amelia Burden Martin.  Ruby graduated from the South San Francisco High School in San Francisco, California.

Ruby married the love of her life and her best friend, Kenneth Boyd Young, on December 5, 1954 in San Francisco.  Together they spent nearly 60 years raising a family and living a lifetime of memories.  Kenneth preceded her in death on May 18, 2014.

Ruby was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Winfield.  She worked for many years for Joe Cox Chrysler in Mount Pleasant where she started as a bookkeeper and worked her way to parts manager.  Ruby was a skilled seamstress and was especially talented at embroidery.  She loved to cook and provide for her beloved family – who will forever miss her key lime pie.  Those who knew Ruby best knew she was a “super grandma” who was the glue of her family.  She was proud of all of the accomplishments of her beloved children and grandchildren and took great pride in all they did.

Ruby is survived by one son, Lt. Colonel Kenneth Wayne Young, and wife Karen, of Edmond, Oklahoma; two daughters, Beverley Joyce Young Nelson, and fiancé Rodney Floyd, of Lone Star, Texas and Sharon Marie Young Mars of Mount Vernon; grandchildren, Sara Michelle Young Chown, and husband Lt. Colonel Ben, of Beaver Creek, Ohio, Michael Shea Young, and wife Carolyn, of Evanston, Illinois, Jay Garrit Nelson, and wife Jamie, of Conroe, Texas, Kylie Marie Nelson Collier, and husband Jeremy, of Mount Pleasant, Texas, and Zachry Daniel Mars of Tyler, Texas; great-grandchildren, Austin Douglas Chown, Emma Noelle Chown, Kenley Ray Collier, and Conor Shea Young; sisters, Martha Mae Price of Mount Vernon, Texas and Julia Bernice Martin Jacobs of Pacifica, California; sister-in-law, Willie Mae Young Evans; and by a host of other nieces, nephews and other relatives and very special friends.

She was also preceded in death by one infant son, Seldon Glen Young; brothers, Lloyd Martin and William Wilson Martin; sister, Bonnie Dale Todd; and one son-in-law, Hugh Jackson Phillips, Jr.
