Obituary of Malcolm Livingston Davis, Jr.

Malcolm Livingston Davis, Jr., age 81, of Mount Vernon, passed away in the early morning hours of Sunday, December 10, 2017 at Mission Manor Nursing Home in Mount Vernon.  Malcolm was born on July 25, 1936 in Arlington, Texas to the late Malcolm Livingston, Sr. and Evelyn Pauline Jordan Davis.  He graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in Dallas in 1954. 

Malcolm married the love of his life and his best friend, Lucy Ann Roberts, on March 1, 1975 in Dallas, Texas.  Together they would spend the next 42 years raising a family and living a lifetime of memories.

Malcolm was a hardworking man.  He started working for the Dallas Morning News at the age of 12 and never slowed down until his health started to fade.  Malcolm is best known for the time he and Lucy owned and operated Mount Vernon Floors.  A short time after they opened their flooring business, the family spent an entire summer vacation building an 18-hole miniature golf course.  In the fall of 1993 the family opened All Star Golf and Games.  Malcolm was not just a hard-working man, he was also a man of many talents.  While attending college at North Texas State University, he was allowed to try out for the 1PM Lab Band, without being a music major, and was asked to join the band.  He was also a skilled baseball player who was once invited into a minor league farm system.

Those who knew Malcolm best would use the acronym “JOY” to describe Malcolm - Jesus. Others. Yourself. Malcolm was a man of deep faith and conviction.  Malcolm was a lay minister for the first Methodist Church Lucas, which is now Good Shepherd United Methodist Church, in the 1970’s and more recently he served as a supply minister for the Rehoboth Baptist Association and the Harmony Pittsburg Baptist Association.  He received a certificate from the Southern Baptist Association in 2001 for completed seminary and completed chaplain school in 2003 where he soon began serving as a chaplain for Cypress Basin Hospice and a volunteer chaplain at East Texas Medical Center in Mount Vernon from 2002 until the hospital shut down in 2015.  Malcolm was proud of his association with the Ministerial Alliance where he served as treasurer for a short time.  He also was a key part of establishing the chaplaincy program with the Franklin County Sherriff’s Office.  Malcolm was also a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Mount Vernon.  Malcolm spent his entire life serving his Lord and offering assistance to anyone he could, when he could.  He leaves behind a legacy of JOY that will be a shining example for all to follow.

Malcolm is survived by his beloved wife, Lucy, of Mount Vernon; daughter, Karen Elaine Cuttill, and husband Larry, of Garland; sons, Jeff Davis, and wife Teresa, of Euless and Mark Davis of Tyler; grandchildren, Deana DePue, and husband Daniel, Shaun Cuttill, and wife Laura, Joshua Cuttill, and wife Rachael, Evan Cuttill, Lisa Valenzuela, and husband Carlos, Hannah Davis, Audra Davis, Ellie Davis, Camden Hicks, and Brantley Davis; great-grandchildren, Tammy Cuttill, Daniel Cuttill, Zachary Cuttill, Victoria Valenzuela, Marisa Valenzuela, Josiah Cuttill, Julian Valenzuela, Savannah Cuttill, Lilliana Valenzuela, Adrian Valenzuela, William DePue, and Ethan Cuttill; and by a host of in-laws and other relatives and very special friends.

Memorial services for Malcolm Davis, Jr. will be held at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, December 16, 2017 at the First Baptist Church of Mount Vernon with Pastor Pepper Puryear officiating.
