Obituary of Warren Rich

Warren Rich, age 93, of Mount Vernon, passed away on Wednesday, March 7, 2018, at Mission Manor Nursing Home. He was born on June 10, 1924 in Lenoir County, North Carolina to the late Tiffany Rich Stroud. At the early age of 17 years old, he joined the U. S. Marines and served in the Pacific from January 1944 until October of 1945. He participated in action against the enemy at Roi and Namur, Kwajalein Atoll, Marshall Islands, in the fourth Marine division, winner of the Presidential Citation for its speedy conquests of Saipan and Tinian. He was wounded in action and received the Purple Heart. He was in the U.S. Marine Corp from 1942 until 1945.

After the war, Mr. Rich made his home in Mount Vernon, where he had a dairy farm for many years. He raised a family on this farm with his wife and 4 children. Later he raised beef cattle and got away from the 7 days a week, 24 hours a day job. He loved being outside with all his farm animals. He will be sorely missed, but heaven gained a great man.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mamie Rich; a son, Ronnie Rich; brothers, William Stroud and Hugh Stroud; and brother-in-law, Billy Sutton.

Mr. Rich is survived by a son, Lennie Rich of Mount Vernon; daughters, Shela Mason of Utah, and Gail Martin and husband C. L. Martin of Mt. Vernon; step-daughter, Jan and husband Marty Bell of Mt. Pleasant; grandchildren, Diana Quinn, Cynthia Anschutz, Chrissy Johnston, Ron Rich, Rusty Day, Tammy Chapman, Amy Eubanks, Chris Bell and Caleb Bell; 11 Great-Grandchildren and 3 Great-Great-Grandchildren; 1 brother, Linwood Giles Stroud; and 2 sisters, Pearl Stroud and Virginia Sutton.

Visitation is scheduled for Sunday, March 11, 2018 from 1 until 2 p.m. at Sam B. Harvey Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. with Bro. Bill Whitaker officiating. Burial will follow at the Mt. Vernon City Cemetery.
