Obituary of C. W. DeShazo

C. W. DeShazo, age 98, passed away on Sunday, April 1, 2018 in Huntsville, Texas. Dub, as he was called by his peers, was born on June 27, 1919 in Saltillo, Texas. He was the fourth and last child of Will and Rosa DeShazo.

Dub was a member of the first graduating class of Saltillo High School. The year was 1936. He served in the Franklin Roosevelt era CCC Corps and the U. S. Army ground forces in WWII. After his military service, he worked for the Santa Fe Railroad. He then attended East Texas State Teachers College in Commerce, Texas via the G.I. Bill of Rights. He became a high school math and science teacher and principal at Sheridan High School in Sheridan, Texas and an administrator with Rice I.S.D. He retired from the education field in 1988. His career in education spanned over a thirty-six year period. His philosophy was in keeping with Chaucer’s Clerk “Gladly would he learn and gladly would he teach.” Mr. D, as he was known by his students, touched the lives of many, many young people inspiring them to believe in themselves and further their education.

As a youth, Dub participated in the Saltillo Methodist Church. Later in life, he was a Charter Member of the Sheridan, Texas Lions Club, the Forrest Masonic Lodge #19, the Scottish Rite Valley of Houston and the Retired Teachers of Texas.

Dub is survived by his wife Mary Lynn Davison DeShazo of Huntsville, Texas and by his son Don DeShazo and wife Hilda of McAllen, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Alice DeShazo King and Jewel DeShazo McAfee and his brother Luther DeShazo.

Funeral service for Mr. DeShazo is scheduled for Saturday, May 5, 2018, at 11 a.m. at Sam B. Harvey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon. Burial will follow at Old Saltillo Cemetery.
