Obituary of Mitchell Pennock Engle
Mitchell Pennock Engle, age 79, of Mount Vernon passed away in the late afternoon hours of Thursday, March 29, 2018. Mitch was born on November 10, 1938, in Somers Point, New Jersey to Dr. Jacob and Mary Engle.
He graduated from Haverford High School in Havertown, Pennsylvania in 1956. Following graduation from Dartmouth College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history in 1960, he enlisted in the U. S. Navy. Stationed in Japan with deployments to the Philippines and Okinawa, Mitch flew over Vietnam, Korea and Japan.
In 1965, he retired from the Navy with the rank of Lieutenant and went to work for American Airlines. He flew domestic flights until the last few years before retirement when he held the position of Program Director for pilot training on the Boeing 727 and then the Fokker 100. Mitch retired as a Captain from American Airlines in 1998.
In retirement Mitch was able to pursue what he enjoyed most, a deep love of nature. He was never happier than when he could enjoy the day on the back porch watching the wild birds in the woods and at the bird feeders with his Labrador Retriever napping at his feet.
Left to miss him very much is his wife of 29 years, Rebecca Engle; daughter and grandson, Joanna Engle-Simper and Luke Simper of Corpus Christi, Texas; brother, Jacob Engle and wife Doreen, of Hudson, Florida; niece, Michele Engle of Indianapolis, Indiana; and nephew, William “Bill” Engle of Lincoln, Rhode Island.
Mitch is preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Jacob Simper.
