Obituary of Robbie Gene Jones

Robbie Gene Jones of Mount Vernon, Texas passed away peacefully Thursday August 2, 2018, surrounded by family at Mission Manor Nursing home.  He was born the youngest of thirteen on February 3, 1932 in the Majors Community outside Mount Vernon, Texas to James Thomas and Edith Irene (McLeod) Jones.

Robbie was a member of the First Baptist Church of Mount Vernon, Texas where he and Mary were active with the youth groups and took many Mission trips and choir tours; he was a deacon at the church. He was a retired employee of Winzen Research in Sulphur Springs, there he oversaw the stratospheric balloons, working closely with NASA to test astronaut suits to the conditions of space.  Robbie loved to work his farm where he raised cattle, horses, hogs, hay and corn.  He was recognized for his outstanding corn crops, ranking second in the state.  He was one of the founders of the South Franklin VFD, a member of the Republic of Texas and drove a school bus for the Mount Vernon ISD. He was Little League baseball coach and he loved to spend time at the lake water skiing, and playing cards and dominos at the Kings Country Clubhouse.

Left to cherish his memory are his children, Robby Gerald Jones, Ricky Scott Jones and his wife Sheleace, all of Mount Vernon, Texas, and Regena “Gena” Diane Jordan and husband Garry of Sulphur Springs, Texas; grandchildren, Jeremy and Melissa Jordan, Joshua and Leslie Jordan, Laura and Jon Lee, Nicole and Brian Boyd, Lisa and Roy Wilmeth, and John and Linza Gann; 15 great grandchildren; brother, L.C. Jones and wife Carolyn, his sister, Janiece Elledge; brother-in-law, Charles Brown, and sister-in-law, Ada Merle Brown.  He is preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Mary Brown Jones, his parents, and siblings, Charlie Jones, Cullis “Punk” Jones, Ray Jones, Perry “Pep” Jones, Eula Evers, Ruth Neal, Ina French, James Jones, Wayne Jones and Frank Pierce.

Funeral services for Robbie will be held at 3:00 PM Sunday, August 5, 2018 at the First Baptist Church in Mount Vernon. Interment will follow at the Providence Cemetery.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service Sunday at the church.
